Samos-Base Pithagorion
Samos
is lying in the Eastern Aegean, very close to the coast of Asia
Minor, almost midway along the sea route that links Greece with
Anatolia. Her location played a great role in its development.
The name Samos is most probably of Phoenician origin.
Over time, it had many other names like Anthemis, Dryousa,
Doryssa, Kyparissia, Imvrasia, Melamphylos, Parthenia.
Beautiful and green, this island, is famous for
its sweet white liqueur wine and is filled with wonderful beaches,
picturesque villages and harbours. The nature of the island,
the climate and the archeological interest have turned this
island in a resort which gathers many tourists. The island
was inhabited since the prehistoric times, and as a part
of the Ionic Confederacy it prospered reaching its peak under
the rule of Polykrates, who annexed many of the neighbouring
islands creating a famous kingdom in the Aegean. After
the Roman times the island became the lair of pirates falling
under Turkish occupation in 1566. In 1912 became part
of Greece.
Vathi
The capital, famous for its beautiful classical
mansions and public buildings, is built on the slopes surrounding
the large bay which lies on the NE corner of the island. Samos
is blessed with superb scenery, ranging from high mountains
dropping sheer to the sea (Mt.Kerteteus 1.440 m), thick pine
forests, cultivated valleys and plains, to beautiful sandy beaches
at the end of deep blue bays.

Pithagorion

located in the south part of the island. In 1955 and in honour
of Pithagoras, the town formerly called Tigani, got her today
